Beijing accuses US of Cold War mindset on nuclear arms

China has joined Russia and Iran in condemning the US decision to develop smaller nuclear weapon systems for American submarines.
The Pentagon said last week that the planned tactical warhead for some ballistic missiles and the reintroduction of a nuclear-tipped cruise missile would help to deter a limited nuclear strike. It named China, Russia, Iran and North Korea, as potential threats.
The Chinese defence ministry said: “We hope that the United States will abandon its Cold War mentality, earnestly assume its special disarmament responsibilities, correctly understand China’s strategic intentions and objectively view China’s national defence and military build-up.” Russia and Iran have already attacked the US plans. Funding for the “low-yield” warheads and the nuclear cruise missile system which had been scrapped by President Obama in 2010, will be included in the 2019 defence budget.
