ANC factions clash as party tries to oust Jacob Zuma from South African presidency

Rival factions of South Africa’s ruling African National Congress clashed violently yesterday after President Zuma defied calls for him to quit by telling party chiefs they could “go hang”.


Demonstrators backing Cyril Ramaphosa, the new head of the ANC, traded insults and punches with those who still support Mr Zuma outside party headquarters in central Johannesburg. Stones were hurled and police struggled to keep the two sides apart.


A flatbed lorry carrying Mr Zuma’s supporters was stopped in traffic in the city centre and its occupants forced to flee. Other ANC members, including party officials, gave chase. One woman was kicked to the ground and attacked with sticks.
