At first, the baby’s parents thought she was merely sleeping. Then as violence engulfed the protest all along the Gaza border fence and the air grew thick with tear gas, they realised that her skin had turned yellow and rushed her to the nearest hospital.
There they learnt the dreadful news: Layla Ghandour, eight months old, had died, apparently from tear gas inhalation; the youngest casualty on the bloodiest day in Gaza since the 2014 war.
She was buried in one of dozens of funerals yesterday across Gaza’s narrow coastal strip.
At least 60 people were killed after the Israeli army opened fire on tens of thousands of Palestinian protesters massing on the Gaza border, on the same day the United States officially moved its embassy to Jerusalem.
