Trump signals summit with Kim is on again

President Trump reversed course sharply yesterday after Thursday’s cancellation of the high-stakes summit with Kim Jong-un, saying efforts were under way to revive it.


North Korea had expressed “great regret” after learning of the US withdrawal, adding that it remained open to talks “at any time”. The pariah state has long sought bilateral talks with the US but Mr Trump is the first president to have acquiesced. He cancelled the summit, planned for next month, after a harsh exchange of rhetoric concerning Libya’s nuclear disarmament more than a decade earlier and the situation in North Korea.


Yesterday he called the Kim regime’s response “a very nice statement” and suggested that the meeting might still go ahead, despite the White House’s revelations that officials had been “stood up” by North Korea at a pre-summit meeting in Singapore.
