Italy splits with allies and demands end to Russia sanctions

Italy’s new populist government has broken ranks with its allies in western Europe by calling for an end to sanctions on Russia.
Giuseppe Conte, the prime minister, used his debut speech to parliament to call for a fresh approach to relations with President Putin, promising that his administration would be leading calls for re-engagement with Moscow.
His call to lift sanctions is likely to alarm British authorities, who have sought a united European response after accusing the Kremlin of being behind the nerve agent attack in Salisbury in March. Sanctions were imposed in 2014 after Russia’s military occupation of Crimea.
