A defiant President Trump lashed out at critics of his decision to split up undocumented immigrant families who enter the US, as members of his own party pleaded with him not to use children as political bargaining chips.

“Democrats are the problem,” Mr Trump tweeted as he defended a “zero tolerance” policy under which more than 2,000 children have been taken away from their parents on the border with Mexico in the past month.

“They don’t care about crime and want illegal immigrants, no matter how bad they may be, to pour into and infest our country . . . They can’t win on their terrible policies, so they view them as potential voters!”
