Riyadh’s canal plan to turn rival Qatar into island

Saudi Arabia is finalising plans to dig a canal that would turn its regional rival Qatar into an island, according to local media, marking a new low in relations as the conflict between the neighbours enters its second year.
Saudi newspapers reported last week that five international contractors had been invited to bid for the contract to dig the canal.
Local media estimated that it would be around 40 miles long and 650ft wide, and could cost up to £565m.
