Putin quick to toast Erdogan’s success in Turkey election

President Putin has made overtures to President Erdogan after his election victory on Sunday, pledging to increase co-operation between their two countries in Syria and signalling that he may try to lure his counterpart even further away from Europe.
The Russian leader said that Mr Erdogan’s win “fully confirms his political weight and the wide support of the policy pursued under his leadership”, even as international election monitors raised concerns over changes to Turkey’s electoral law and the fairness of the campaigning period.
Mr Putin was one of the first to congratulate Mr Erdogan, 64, joining Viktor Orban, the Hungarian prime minister, and the governments of Venezuela, Azerbaijan, Pakistan and Belarus, among others.
